The end of an era

Posted by: Aaron Mildenstein   in Announcements, The Lint Brush

It seems so long ago that I first got my site hosted. I’ve been so lax in its upkeep that I can hardly believe it’s been 9 years since I registered untergeek.com. Creation Date: 06-Mar-2001.

I worked for Verio then as a UNIX Systems Administrator. I got a free account just for being employed there. It was awesome! I learned a lot about UNIX and about hosting (web/email/database, etc). I’ve moved on—2.5 years of having moved on—and Verio pulled the plug on my grandfathered-in account. I’ve heard from friends still employed there that their accounts are also affected (or halted, perhaps) in some Stalin-esqe sounding purge. I got my email a while back with the ominous title, “Account Clean Up Project” from the “Verio Account Audit Team.” They were giving me 10 business days to either become a paying customer or get out. Guess which one I opted for?

Verio’s been extraordinarily good to me, so I can’t complain. But their current pricing is a bit steep for what I need, so I’ve moved to Rackspace Cloud hosting. I pay for what I use, bandwidth-wise, and storage-wise if I need more than my product-class provides. This isn’t a plug for them yet, but it’s been pretty good so far.

Initially I was planning to discontinue untergeek.com. We decided it was worth keeping when we also decided to keep my wife’s blog about motherhood, www.womenasmothers.com. Perhaps I’ll use this more now, seeing as how I have to pay for it!

The big room shuffle of 2009, part 1

Posted by: Aaron Mildenstein   in Announcements, Untergeeky

After steam cleaning the carpet upstairs, it took me most of the day to shut down, disconnect, disassemble, move, reassemble, reconnect and adjust all of the computers. If I do say so, it was worth it! Now it’s family LAN party time!

Moving to Texas

Posted by: Aaron Mildenstein   in Announcements, News

Yes, I’m moving to Texas. I’ve accepted a job in Austin and I will be there on the 29th.

Perhaps I’ll blog more once I’ve done this. We’ll have to see. Things are likely to be busy in the meanwhile.

At any rate, my family and I are moving to Texas. I’ll be going first in order that I might get situated. My wife will be joining me to help in hunting for a home while my mother-in-law keeps an eye on our children. My wife will be with me for a week or so.

We barely listed our home on Monday and a realtor is coming to show the house tonight. We could only be so fortunate as to have someone want to buy our house so soon.

That’s all the update I have time for right now. I will have to keep this updated more regularly after I move.

New theme, new stuff.

Posted by: Aaron Mildenstein   in Announcements, Untergeeky

Blessedly, this is looking as though it’s finished. Maybe with a new look I’ll actually write some new content.

:)

Update:

I have discovered that IE 6 does NOT properly display this site. If you’re using IE 6, you’re missing one of the columns. Please switch to any of the following browsers (each of which I have personally tested):

IE 7
Safari (Mac)
Firefox

IE 6 is not a very safe browser to be using anyway. You’re far more open to spyware and other nasty stuff if you use IE 6. Click on the button in the sidebar and download Firefox. It’s worth it. You won’t be sorry.

Untested browsers which will probably work include Opera, Mozilla, Netscape, Konqueror, etc. Why is it that MS can’t make a standards compliant browser to save its life?

Bad PHP scripts

Posted by: Aaron Mildenstein   in Announcements, Untergeeky

I recently upgraded to PHP5. Apparently some part of my main page didn’t like PHP5.

I get to play the “Change it all over again” game.

The plus side is a change in scenery. Meanwhile, I hope the bland doesn’t kill you…

Watch 20/20 tonight

Posted by: Aaron Mildenstein   in Announcements, Education, The Lint Brush

I know what I’ll be doing at 8pm MST tonight — watching John Stossel give the public education system a real-time fisking.

(Please make note of the pointed difference between the public education system and individual teachers. The tack he is taking is that a governmental monopoly on public education is cheating children and families all over the USA. As far as I’ve been able to ascertain, he isn’t attacking teachers, but rather the system).
This is one of the rare occasions when I will find myself viewing network television. It just doesn’t happen very often.

Welcome, visitors from The Common Room

I hope I’m not too unusual for you. I’m both flattered and pleased by all of this extra attention. I only hope my posted material is up to the scrutiny.

Posting will decline for a while

Posted by: Aaron Mildenstein   in Announcements

If you hadn’t already noticed, I’ve not posted regularly for a while. This will continue for another week or so. I’m filling some busy shoes right now since my manager, who is in the hospital with meningitis, has asked me to be his go-to guy while he’s in there.

Lucky me.

Hopefully posting will resume some sense of normalcy sometime soon.

It runs in the family

Posted by: Aaron Mildenstein   in Announcements

Insanity, that is. Why we do the things we do, I’ll never know.

The Unterwife has, at last, made it into the blogosphere (and there was much rejoicing). Her pace in posting may not be as frequent as some, but she’ll be posting as she finds time and content that suits her. She’s chosen to address motherhood as her over-arching theme. Check her first post out at Women as Mothers and be nice — this is her first foray into a larger world.

A public service announcement from the Untergeek

Posted by: Aaron Mildenstein   in Announcements, News

I purchased just such a set. You should be aware if you purchased one also.

Fingertip amputations prompt recall of children’s chairs – Apr. 29, 2005

About 1.5 million children’s folding chairs are being recalled because they pose a risk of fingertip amputation, the Consumer Product Safety Commission announced Friday.

The website is here, complete with photos of the offending product.

More themes hit the shelves

Posted by: Aaron Mildenstein   in Announcements

Meet the “Coffee Cup” and “Benevolence” themes. I found the “Coffee Cup” theme very asthetically pleasing, and I enjoyed using the GIMP to put the “Untergeek” logo on both new themes.

If you’re mormon (like myself) and the image of a coffee cup is unsettling (unlike myself), pretend it’s cocoa, or select one of the other themes. Your browser should remember your choice.

New Look

Posted by: Aaron Mildenstein   in Announcements

Yes, we have another theme. Choose the theme you like using the drop-down menu on the side.

Also, we have email and print icons on every post, easily enabling you to send posts to whomever you desire, or print them for posterity.

More themes are forthcoming…I’m just not sure when.

The earth is round

Posted by: Aaron Mildenstein   in Announcements, The Lint Brush

No, I haven’t fallen off the face of the earth. I have been on vacation since the afternoon of the 8th. Disneyland, SeaWorld, Marine Corps Recruit graduation, the beach, etc. Many days, much driving. I’m going to sleep now. Regular posting resumes tomorrow.
