Person of pallor

This almost belongs in a “What were they thinking?” category. Of course, that would require thinking. This is knee-jerk reaction without thought.

Beyond the Pale?

Four students at Omaha, Neb.’s Westside High School are in trouble for distributing a poster urging the school to give Trevor Richards its “Distinguished African American Student Award,” the Omaha World-Herald reports. Although the school refuses to say what punishments it meted out, Trevor’s mother says he was suspended for two days for hanging the poster.

Trevor is in fact African-Ameircan[sic]; indeed, he’s an immigrant from South Africa. But school officials say he’s ineligible for the award–which is given out every Martin Luther King Day–because he’s a person of pallor. One of the four students “was punished for circulating a petition Tuesday morning in support of the boys.”

So not only is the school “honoring” Dr. King by judging students on the color of their skin rather than the content of their character; they’re punishing anyone who dares question their policies.

Westside High School has a total of ZERO black faculty members, yet they are punishing the kids for being racist. Make them look very hypocritical.

I go to this school and the administration is callin trevor racist for this yet they are saying this award should only go to a black student. Thats just not right it should be for eveyone. I don’t see an award for only a white student. Westside administration is horrible, they would suspend a kid for almost anything.

Hey I support Trevor, he’s more African American than anyone in that whole school could ever be. Is there an email or some way we can send him a message of our support??

Surely being born in Africa, i.e. being a citizen of a country in Africa before moving to the USA would make one an African-American. Not all Africans have dark skins. South Africa has various population groups with varying degrees of skin pigmentation.
If Mr Richards’ suspension is based on the colour of his skin alone, then clearly he is not the one being racist. He did not invent the term ‘African-American’, did he? Can’t help but wonder how the school would classify him. Euro-South-African-American, perhaps? That would make dark skinned South Africans living in the USA African-South-African-African-Americans wouldn’t it?

The award should be renamed “Distinguished black student award.” Of course that couldn’t happen because, oh no!, that would be racist terminology wouldn’t it? Actions speak louder than words, and this incident has just shown up racism for what it really is! I support my countryman all the way, he’s a brave guy who has experienced more of African life than most people in that school ever will. Go Trevor! – A fellow (South) African.

Trevor is the most AFRICAN person in his school. He was born there, raised there, and is clearly an AFRICAN PERSON. The teachers at his school(Geography teachers to be more specific) are idiots if they didn’t know that there are more then just dark-skined people in the whole of africa. There are whites, blacks, arabs, indian, mixed race, and chinese. If they wanted to give the award to a black student, they should of called the award “Distinguished BLACK African American Student Award.” They should blame themselves for not being specific. What person in their right minds would suspend an African for asking to be given the “African” award? Common sense. If I lived in America and went to Trevor’s school(I would be among the token black people at that school for I am Ghanian!) I would…I don’t know vote for him because he clearly is an AFRICAN!
