Interview With Richard Miniter, author of “Shadow War”

   Posted by: Brandon   in News

An excerpt from the interview; when asked whether or not there have been victories in The War on Terror that haven’t been reported in the mainstream press, Mr. Miniter responds:

“The US captured the “al Qaeda Admiral” on the island of Umm Qassar. Abdul Rahim al-Nasheri commanded a fleet of 15 cargo ships used to transport terrorists and bombs. His ships supplied the bombs of the US embassy bombings in East Africa on Aug. 7, 1998–which killed hundreds of Africans and 12 American diplomats. He was the mastermind of the USS Cole attack, which killed or wounded 44 American sailors. And, he was planning an attack on the US Navy’s Fifth fleet when he was captured. One of his ships was stopped off the coast of Greece with enough high explosives in the hold to create a blast bigger than the Hiroshima bomb. That’s a victory that should have made front-page news. Instead, only a few wire services picked it up.”

Interesting to note something here: the “al Qaeda Admiral” was captured on the island of Umm Qassar; now, many people may not realize it, but Umm Qassar is in IRAQ! I know this because it was my ship (USS Valley Forge, CG-50) that was responsible for securing the port in Umm Qassar. But wait a minute… aren’t we being told that there was no link between al Qaeda and Iraq???

Wasn’t a link between al-Qaeda and Iraq. Al-Zarqawi is in Iraq now, running al-Qaeda’s business there. Has been for a while. He used to be with Osama in Afghanistan, but I guess we lost interest and let him get away. Luckily, we have a pretty good chance of nailing him in Iraq now. :) I hope they get him.

TOUCHE! That was entirely *MY* fault… I allowed the time-frame issue to slip my mind on this one, I apologize for that huge oversight! I think it was caused by the fact that we haven’t heard of Umm Qassar since the close of the war so I assumed this had happened during the war when we were securing the port… also, that fact linked with other statements that I have read about the indications that Iraq did in fact support al Qaida in non-official capacities… it just sort of all gelled and solidified in my brain… heh… again, good point! :)
